Millikan A tribute to PEGGY TENENBAUM ALPER
Recently, I was in "Noah's New York Bagels" in Huntington Beach, looking at the photos covering their walls: old pictures of New York, plus wonderful pictures taken during the past 70 years of relatives and friends of Noah Alper (the founder of the restaurant chain).
Imagine my surprise to see a wonderful photo of PEGGY TENENBAUM, taken in 1947 in Belmont Shore. She's about 5, dressed as Queen Ester, probably for the Jewish holiday of Purim, standing next to her grandmother. Evidently, Peggy's husband, Fred Alper, is a brother of Noah. (There are photos of Fred there, also.) I begged the manager to let me take the photo to Kinko's to be scanned so I could share it with others who have fond memories of Peggy, who passed away in 1999. This was a particularly special moment for me, to find this photo. Peggy was a dear friend in high school. She used to invite me to her home for some of the Jewish holidays to enjoy the festivities and food. Also, we had some wonderful spiritual talks. She knew I was interested in Judaism, but my parents weren't thrilled about it so I didn't pursue it. Then a few years ago I decided to go for it- study intensely and get involved with a Temple; finally, last year I "officially" converted. Well, I hadn't communicated with Peggy since the 60's, and was delighted to see her Email address on our original OneList. So I wrote a long email to her in October, 1999, telling her about my conversion and thanking her for being so kind and helpful in this matter, during our teenage years. She never saw the Email...just about the time it arrived, she passed away. I was so upset that I hadn't been able to write her sooner. Since then I've thought about her constantly, and when I came upon this photo, I got tingly all over......it was almost as if Peggy was sending me a message - dressed in her Queen Ester costume - welcoming me into Judaism, and telling me that she did get my letter after all. It had been delivered to a higher place....... Thank you, Peggy. God bless you. Also see "Classmates We Will Miss" Hosted, Lates Updates Looking for a Classmate?
